In 2007, Warren Buffett made a one million USD bet that an index fund would outperform a collection of hedge funds over the course of 10 years. In 2017, he won that bet.
In this master class, we will explore how the combination of Fintech and index investing has resulted in a perfect storm for the wealth advisory industry worldwide, making low cost and optimal investments portfolios available to any investor regardless of the volume of their financial assets and level of sophistication. It also allows for a better customization of portfolios based on each individual investor’s needs and preferences, fostering massive growth of Social Impact and conscious investing.
This transition does not come without dilemmas. Should private companies define and regulate such indexes? With ETFs being a scale business, is it right that only a few private companies control that massive global market?
Pablo Soler is a Finance professor at IE Business School and Guest Lecturer at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where he specializes in Venture Capital and Fintech. Professor Soler started his career at GE. After his MBA at INSEAD, he joined Boston Consulting Group for a few years. For the last 10 years, he has participated in the creation, launch, and management of several fintech start-ups. He is a consultant with extensive international business experience and an advocate of ESG, Social Impact Investment, Stakeholder Capitalism, and UBI (Universal Basic Income).
